Hybrid layers of etch-and-rinse versus self-etching adhesive systems.

2010

Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness in the formation of resin tags, adhesive lateral branches and hybrid layers of five adhesive systems, when bonding to dentine. Material and Methods: Flat dentin surfaces from 25 molars were bonded with several adhesive systems according to the manufacturers? instructions. Composite build-ups were constructed incrementally with Tetric Ceram. The Specimens were sectioned parallel to the long axis. One section was treated with phosphoric acid and sodium hypochlorite in order to reveal the hybrid layer formation. The other section was stored in 30% hydrochloric acid to detect resin tags and adhesive lateral branch formation. Results: The two etch-and-rin…

Current dental adhesives systems. A narrative review.

2012

Adhesive dentistry is based on the development of materials which establish an effective bond with the tooth tissues. In this context, adhesive systems have attracted considerable research interest in recent years. Successful adhesive bonding depends on the chemistry of the adhesive, on appropriate clinical handling of the material as well as on the knowledge of the morphological changes caused on dental tissue by different bonding procedures. This paper outlines the status of contemporary adhesive systems, with particular emphasis on chemical characteristics and mode of interaction of the adhesives with enamel and dentinal tissues. Dental adhesives are used for several clinical application…

Effect of self-etching primer/adhesive and conventional bonding on the shear bond strength in metallic and ceramic brackets

2011

Introduction: Bracket debonding from the tooth surface is a common problem in fixed orthodontics. The aims of the present study were to assess the bond strength and failure sites in two ways of bonding technique, with metallic and ceramic brackets. Material and Methods: One hundred premolars were assigned to 4 groups of 25 each: Group A, metallic brackets/ conventional procedure; Group B, metallic brackets/Transbond XT; Group C, ceramic brackets/conventional procedure; and Group D, ceramic brackets/Transbond XT. Transbond XT composite paste was used for bracket bonding and cured by conventional light-cure device. Specimens were subjected to thermocycling. One week after bonding shearing for…

Early bone healing around implant surfaces treated with variations in the resorbable blasting media method. A study in rabbits.

2010

Objective: this study aimed to histomorphologically and histomorphometrically evaluate the in vivo response to three variations in the resorbable blasting media (RBM) surface processing in a rabbit femur model. Study Design: screw root form implants with 3.75 mm in diameter by 8 mm in length presenting four surfaces (n=8 each): alumina-blasted/acid-etched (AB/AE), bioresorbable ceramic blasted (TCP), TCP + acid etching, and AB/AE + TCP were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The implants were placed at the distal femur of 8 New Zeland rabbits, remaining for 2 weeks in vivo. After sacrifice, the implants were nondecalcified processed to 30 …

Push-out bond strength of quartz fiber posts to root canal dentin using total-etch and self-adhesive resin cements

2011

Objectives: Several adhesive systems are available for cementation of fibre posts into the root canal. The aim of the present study was to investigate the push-out bond strengths of quartz fibre posts to root dentin with the use of different total-etch and self-adhesive resin cements. Study Design: Ninety single-rooted human premolars were endodontically treated and standardized post-spaces were prepared. Fibre posts were cemented with different luting agents: total-etch (Nexus NX3, Duo-Link, and RelyX ARC) and self-adhesive resin cements (Maxcem Elite, BisCem, and RelyX Unicem). Three post/dentin sections (coronal, middle and apical) were obtained from each specimen, and push-out bond stre…

Ultra-structure characterization of self-etching treated cementum surfaces

2010

Objectives: to evaluate the effect of different conditioning treatments on surface roughness and topography of dental cementum. Study Design: Extracted human canines were used for the present study. The mesial surface from the cervical third of the roots were ground flat with wet 600-grit silicon carbide paper. They were polished (up to 1/4 µm diamond paste) and treated as follows: 1) No treatment, 2) 35% H3PO4 during 15 s, 3) Clearfil SE Bond primer (SEB), 4) One-Up Bond F (OUB). The adhesive systems were applied following manufacturer?s instructions. SEB primer and OUB were removed from surfaces by washing and ultrasonic agitation with ascending ethanol solutions. Digital images of treate…

Effect of surface treatment with sandblasting and Er,Cr:YSGG laser on bonding of stainless steel orthodontic brackets to silver amalgam

2011

Objectives: Satisfactory bonding of orthodontic attachments to amalgam is a challenge for orthodontists. The aim of this in vitro study was to compare the shear bond strength of stainless steel orthodontic brackets to silver amalgam treated with sandblasting and Er,Cr:YSGG laser. Study Design: Fifty-four amalgam discs were prepared, polished and divided into three groups: In group 1 (the control group) the premolar brackets were bonded using Panavia F resin cement without any surface treatment; in groups 2 and 3, the specimens were subjected to sandblasting and Er,Cr:YSGG laser respectively, before bracket bonding. After immersing in distilled water at 37°C for 24 hours, all the specimens w…

Ultrasound Effects after Post Space Preparation: An SEM Study

2006

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of ultrasonic treatment on occlusion of dentine tubules in root canal walls after post space preparation in endodontically treated teeth. Twenty-four premolars were instrumented and filled using warm vertical condensation; after post space preparation, they were divided into two groups. The control group was treated using the etching procedure. The experiment samples were treated with EDTA irrigation and ultrasound activation for 30 s before the etching procedure. The roots were divided and the canal walls were examined under SEM at 1000x magnification. The debris and open tubule marks were observed at 2, 6, and 10 mm levels using a three-ste…
